What are Computer Viruses

The term "Computer Virus" has become a blanket statement for various types of malicious or unwanted software that infects and spreads through computer systems. In recent years, the growth and accessibility of the Internet has made it easier than ever for attacks to spread. You no longer need to share a floppy disk or download and install a program to get infected. Now it's as simple as opening the wrong email or visiting a webpage that you shouldn't have? and the damage is done. Worse is the fact that once infected, the door is open for more viruses to come through and infect your computer.

1. Install an Anti-Virus program and keep it updated. 90% of the battle is to have one and keep it updated. You can pick one of any reputable source and the difference in virus definitions and effectiveness is minimal compared to not having one installed.

2. Be careful of what you click! If you don't recognize a sender of an email or if a link to a webpage looks fishy, DON'T CLICK IT! There are creative ways to still safely open these items if necessary (Virtual Machine, sandbox, etc.).
